Dalian drives industrial innovation for future

The 2026 Summer Davos Forum highlighted Dalian's strategic strides in developing a modern industrial system. As the city moves forward with the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30), it is prioritizing advanced manufacturing as a backbone, while enhancing traditional industries, nurturing emerging sectors, and planning for future industries. In the first quarter of 2026, the added value of Dalian's large-scale industries rose by 9.9 percent, and profits surged by 36.6 percent, underscoring the industrial sector's stabilizing role in the economy.
Traditional industries in Dalian are advancing through smarter, greener, and more integrated practices. Hengli Heavy Industry Co is a prime example, having launched construction of over 150 vessels, with orders secured through 2030. Dalian Huarui Heavy Industry Group reported first-quarter revenue of 4.05 billion yuan ($560 million), marking a 15.41 percent increase, driven by exports in wind power, cranes, and offshore equipment.
Emerging industries in Dalian are thriving, with a strong focus on software and IT services, integrated circuits, and new materials. DHC Co, a leader in digital technology services, highlights the city's strength in AI, making strides in intelligent manufacturing and smart healthcare. Dalian Overseas Huasheng Electronic Technology Co has launched the world's first fully automated smart factory for electronic materials, boosting China's tech supply chain.
In the first quarter of 2026, software and IT services revenue grew by 3.1 percent, driven by the widespread adoption of AI technologies. Dalian is advancing its semiconductor industry, forming a strong information technology cluster and promoting large-scale applications of new technologies.
Dalian is also investing in future-focused industries such as embodied intelligence, biomanufacturing, hydrogen energy storage, and brain-computer interfaces. Notably, Dalian Practical Biotechnology Co is using synthetic biology to scale the production of plant-derived compounds, demonstrating the city's commitment to innovation. Together, these efforts are positioning Dalian as a hub for industrial growth and technological advancement, setting the stage for a future-ready economy.
