Dalian expands opening-up through port hubs

Dalian is strengthening its role as a gateway hub by expanding international openness and connectivity. Liaoning Port Group launched the new "Dalian – Middle East" container shipping route (SHIKRA) on May 26, deploying eight large vessels to directly connect Dalian with ports in India, Pakistan, the UAE, and Oman.

This route fills a critical gap in direct shipping services to the Middle East, facilitating exports from Northeast China, including grain, chemicals, and auto parts. Additionally, the "Shanghai – Liaoning Express Corridor" was established, enhancing north-south logistics connectivity in partnership with Shanghai International Port Co and Antong Holdings Co.

Dayaowan Port, from Dalian Area of China (Liaoning) Pilot Free Trade Zone, the core area of Dalian's international shipping and logistics center in Northeast Asia, handles over 70 percent of Northeast China's foreign trade cargo. With 106 container routes, including 93 dedicated to foreign trade, the port supports extensive commerce with more than 160 countries.

In 2025, Dalian added six new foreign trade routes, achieving a container throughput of 5.41 million 20-foot equivalent units, up 2.2 percent year-on-year. Dalian Free Trade Zone also initiated China's first bonded liquefied natural gas bunkering for international vessels and Northeast China's first bonded green methanol bunkering business.

Dalian Free Trade Zone has made significant strides in institutional innovation. The zone contributed 14 of the 35 reform experiences promoted in Liaoning province. The zone achieved breakthroughs in areas like bonded engine repair and digital customs services for automobiles, boosting industry growth. With over 800 institutional innovations, Dalian continues to drive regional economic development and enhance its international trade capabilities.
