News recently came from the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva in Switzerland that the digital twin-driven intelligent monitoring and control technology for energy storage developed by the Peking University Ordos Research Institute of Energy won the Silver Award at the exhibition.

Smart grids can exacerbate local battery hotspots and lithium separation short circuits under complex fluctuating conditions, which may cause serious electrical fires. To solve this problem, Professor Song Jie, chief scientist of the Peking University Ordos Research Institute of Energy, led an energy big data team in the development of a digital twin-driven intelligent monitoring and control technology for energy storage.

Based on the completion of full life-cycle model mapping in virtual space, the technology fully leverages the energy storage mechanism model and sensor accumulated operational data, to achieve the integration of multiple physical fields and multi-scale optimization. It can effectively achieve high-precision simulation of energy storage and smart grid interactive collaboration and help to complete in-situ monitoring and intelligent control of battery energy storage to eliminate potential hazards.

According to the 14th Five Year Plan (2021-25) for Comprehensive Energy Development of Ordos City, by 2025, the installed capacity of renewable energy in Ordos should reach 50 million kilowatts, and the installed capacity of energy storage stations should exceed 10 percent of the new energy installed capacity. That's why battery safety has become one of the key factors restricting the large-scale layout of energy storage and the development of new energy power systems in Ordos.

The technology is thus of great importance, as it can make the detection of faults in batteries more accurate and reliable. This will not only improve the guarantee capacity and security level of Ordos' energy supply, but also promote the green and low-carbon transformation of energy.
