The School of International Journalism and Communication takes "connecting China and foreign countries and communicating with the world" as its guiding philosophy, and aims to cultivate international journalism and communication talents based on the language teaching skills and resources of Beijing Foreign Studies University.
The school's roots can be traced back to the early 1980s when three graduates from the English department entered China Daily in 1981. After 40 years of development, the school has expanded in scale, improved talent training methods and promoted the development of new academic disciplines. In 1985, the major of international journalism was established in the English department; In 2001, the Department of International Journalism and Communication was established within the School of English and International Studies. In 2014, the School of International Journalism and Communication was established.
The school has established a systematic training system covering doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degree programs. Along with Renmin University of China, Tsinghua University, Communication University of China, and Fudan University, it is one of the five training centers for international journalism and communication talents assigned by the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the CPC and the Ministry of Education. The undergraduate specialty in Journalism was approved as a feature program of the Ministry of Education in 2009 and was included in the national first-class undergraduate specialty construction program in 2019. In the same year, the specialty in Communication was established. In terms of master’s education, academic programs in journalism and communication, and professional programs in journalism and communication are provided. The doctoral degree program in international communications studies covers cross-cultural communication, strategic communication, Marxist journalism, global communication, Chinese international news communication history, all-media international news, international communication, political communication, and sports communication. In addition, the school has ten research centers and a post-doctoral research station.
The school has 21 full-time teachers, including eight professors and four associate professors. All full-time teachers have obtained doctoral degrees from top universities at home and abroad. Among the teachers, there is one candidate for the “Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand” Talents Program, three “New Century Outstanding Talents” supported by the Ministry of Education, two talents from the Beijing Propaganda and Culture System, and one talent in the field of radio and television theories. The school has carried out international exchange and cooperation, and has built up an international educational platform for teachers and students alike. In 2012, the school and the University of Bolton in the UK launched the all-media international journalism program, and multiple exchanges and summer study tours.
