John Makeham is an Australian sinologist and Emeritus Professor of the School of Culture, History and Language at Australian National University. He is also Emeritus Professor at La Trobe University and member of Australian Academy of the Humanities. His major research fields include the intellectual history of Chinese philosophy, with a particular interest in Confucian thought through Chinese history and in the role played by Sinitic Buddhist thought as an intellectual resource in pre-modern and modern Confucian philosophy. He is the author of Lost Soul: “Confucianism” in Contemporary Chinese Academic Discourse, and The Narrator and the Author: Chinese Commentators and Commentaries on the Analects of Confucius, etc.
